What are some tips on how to search for pre-existing bugs?

First you may want to read the GitHub Help page on Searching Issues. But here are some specific recommendations:

  1. Use the global search box not the repository-specific one, i.e. the one at the top of the page on https://github.com
  2. Use the user:atom tag — this will search all repositories owned by the Atom organization
  3. Use the is:issue tag
  4. Use the is:open or is:closed tag, if possible
  5. If you can remember who opened the Issue, use the author: tag
  6. If you can remember a label that was on it, use the label: tag
  7. If you can remember someone who commented on it, use the commenter: tag
