Tree view doesn't open (all the time) on mac osx

Most times I start atom, the tree view is missing. I can’t toggle it on either. I’m running the latest version of atom, on yosemite.

But this was happening on an older version of both atom and osx as well.

How do you open atom? If you’re just opening a single file, atom assumes you just want to open that file. Personally, when I want the tree view I simply use the terminal to navigate to the folder I want and then type ‘atom .’ to open that folder in Atom.
