Where did you download it from? What version are you trying to install?

Have you tried opening the error log? Can you paste it in a Gist ( and then link it here?

Hi James. Could you say that again…

error log

Your username is too long. You can get around this by downloading (find it at and unzipping it, though you will need to manually update each time a new version of Atom is released.

@Wliu: Hi my friend.
I have some doubt on what you are saying (sorry).

The guy’s use name in Windows is Abraham.

I think the issue is with the Windows version. “insider” is the code name for “beta” / experimental / not final / “try and give us your feedback” version.

The suggestion to make a portable install is however a good suggestion.
There are some notes to follow which I have done and suggest.

@James.Bond: Please look at

The error in the logs is the following:
2018-01-05 15:36:44> IEnableLogger: Failed to install package to app dir: System.IO.PathTooLongException: The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.

That always indicates a username issue. While the length of the Atom path may change between versions as npm package dependencies change, that’s not something we can easily control at this time.

I downloaded software from this website:

Is the report you give accurate or did you change the user name to Abraham? No judgement if you had done so.

I do not ask that you give the user name you have in reality. Please just count how many characters are in the name. If it is of other characters than English alphabet letters, this is of importance too. thank you for your co-operation with this.

Please consider making a portable installation. I have one and is very happy with it. Needing to keep the core software updated manually is not such a big deal. The add-ons are kept up to date automatically.

Good luck.

Of-course i gave accurate, I have decided to give up on Atom
I just wanted to use this since i am a student and a YouTuber suggested me, but…
Thanks anyway. My bad,
