Providing a REPL for Language X

So in my case that X would be Julia. I’m here following up from this thread. I was successful at integrating a Julia to Javascript mapping using node which allows Julia to be embedded in Atom. Seems useful, but at this point, I’m wondering at what is typically done. Is the editor integrated using another pane or something, or are they more or less separate. It would be exciting, I think, to have an editor and immediate results and those results being displayed. Certainly this has been done before with other languages, but I think this might be the first time for Julia and operating in the same datas pace as the editor rather than via TCP, might be so much faster that it can give rise to new things. Searching for some feedback here, place to start.
