Preventing pointer event on <a> still creates a new window

In the renderer, Ctrl+Click or Shift+Click on <a> link creates a new window by default.
Cancelling the pointer event does not prevent creation of new window.

Fails:

document.addEventListener("pointerdown", (e) => {
e.preventDefault();
}, false);

Works as expected:

document.addEventListener("click", (e) => {
	e.preventDefault();
}, false);
