Is there a "pretty-mode", or is it possible to implement one?

#1

Is it possible to display text in a different form from how it is saved? For example, when inputting “\alpha”, it becomes “α” on the screen display, but is still saved as “\alpha” in file (for compiler to recognize)?

(For those who also use emacs, what I ask is essentially pretty-mode using font lock: http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/PrettySymbol).

If there is no such mode in atom, but there is api to make it possible, I will be happy to try writing such an extension.

The API has changed a lot since that topic was opened though, so it may be more possible now than when the discussion originally occurred.
