Is file:// used in Atom?

My web-browser captures html:// urls being opened and shows the web page. Now I am changing it to capture any protocol with ^\w+:// regex.

Are there places in Atom that expect file:// to open a file for editing? I don’t want my capture to interfere.

I considered adding a check for a web extension like ^\w+://.*\.(php|html)$ but this has two problems. I would have to put in a long list of possible exceptions that would never be accurate, and how would I know whether the .html file is being opened to edit or show? So this was a stupid idea.
