How to install Atom on a linux system without root permissions

#1

How can I install/use Atom on a linux system where a normal user has only write permission for his home directory.

Thanks for any help.

For Debian or one of its derivatives (e.g. Ubuntu) you should be able to do something like this:

# Download Atom .deb package. In this example v1.0.7.
wget --no-check-certificate https://github.com/atom/atom/releases/download/v1.0.7/atom-amd64.deb
# Install Atom in the user's home directory.
dpkg -i --force-not-root --root=$HOME atom-amd64.deb

I have no Debian/Ubuntu VM ready right now to test it, but I’m quite sure this approach should work (or at the very least give you a starting point).

I have no experience with the Red Hat Linux family, so I don’t know how rpm handles installations.
