How do I install packages without Visual Studio?

I am trying to get atom to work on a PC that is locked down by my employer. I do not intend to use it for coding, but for writing, notetaking (markdown) and keeping my todolist (todotxt). I like to install some packages, but found out that I need Visual Studio to (re)compile Atom.

How do I install packages without the availability of Visual Studio?

There are some packages that have C++ code that must be compiled with node-gyp which requires visual studio, just as any binary node package does. But there aren’t very many of those.

What do you mean by re-compile? You can just download the windows installer and run it. No compilation required.
