How can I change the editor's layout?

Currently the layout of atom is

 _________________________________
| file | text area |
| tree | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| |------------------------|
| | status bar and panels |
|--------------------------------|

but I’d much rather have it like this

 _________________________________
| file | text area |
| tree | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
|--------------------------------|
| status bar and panels |
|--------------------------------|

This would give the panels much more space which I find much more sensible than giving it all to the file tree.

Since this would change the underlying layout, I’m not sure how this could be done by a theme or a package.

What do you think?

There is an open issue on the status-bar repository for this very request:

Ah, thanks! I didn’t find this before.
