Hidding/Showing chunks of text

I have a feeling this is a common thing in coding, but I am using Atom for markdown and writing. In Markdown, you can have a [^footnote that says something] embedded in your text. Or you can [^fn1] put a reference thingy, and fill out the footnote later. I like embedded footnotes, but I wish there was a way to hide or show the text that is within the brackets at will. Is there? Where should I be looking for a solution?

Many thanks,

[^fn1]: Over here! This is a footnote.

Well, the place to look for a solution would be the list of Markdown-related packages.
If there isn’t one that does this, and you’ve got the skills and time, you could try and create a package for it yourself.
