"Extra" Untitled Window?

When I start Atom I get a an empty untitled window, as in most programs. When I use the file menu to open another file, I get another window and the first, untitled window stays around.

Is there a way to tell Atom not to start with an empty, untitled window?

Or at the very least close the untitled window.

This doesn’t apply to sessions started with a file as an argument, as in the system menu -> Open with Atom.
The application just opens the selected file without the untitled window in the background.
