Does using XP make Atom hopeless?

I’m taking a Python MOOC that recommends Atom as the editor. The Atom directions say Win 7 or higher, If I try to install it on Win XP will I get a slightly less capable editor or make a mess on my PC.

I don’t know about XP, but I do know it has to be a 64-bit cpu.

As stated in this previous topic:

Electron and by extension Atom will not run on anything less than Windows 7. Additionally, as stated here:

support for Windows XP is not planned nor is it being considered.
