Atom not launching in Ubuntu 18.05.4

Hi,

Atom 1.54.0 has suddenly stopped launching for me on Ubuntu 18.05.4 (from either the terminal or the taskbar). Not sure if it’s been raised here already as there have been a lot of complaints on the Ubuntu software centre over the last few days reporting the same issue.

If I attempt to open Atom, the only response I get is a pinwheel at the top, but no window is opened. Tried uninstalling and re-installing.

Is this a bug with the latest Ubuntu software update or latest Atom release or something?

Thanks

as there have been a lot of complaints on the Ubuntu software centre over the last few days reporting the same issue.

That sounds suspiciously like the Snap distribution of Atom? If so, it’s not provided by Atom itself and you should try the install steps in the Flight Manual.

I know there’s been people complaining on the Atom issue tracker about the same problem, but they explicitly say it’s the snap that is not working. General policy is that bugs on unofficial distribution channels (like the snap) are up to whoever is distributing it to resolve (they may end up discovering it is caused by a bug in Atom, but they would need to identify this themselves).

As 've been mentioned earlier this can be not the atom package problem, but snap.

I’ve temporarily fixed by downgrading atom to 1.53.0: snap refresh atom --revision 265
