Atom crashes under Ubuntu 17.10

#1

Hello, I installed the latest version of Atom on Ubuntu 17.10. When I double clicked on the icon to launch it, the entire screen turned blank with a flashing underscore on the top left. After a few seconds, the entire screen turned blank. I had to force reboot the system. I uninstalled and reinstalled the application but the situation remains the same. Could you please help?

Can you confirm how you installed Atom (e.g. from the official .deb from https://atom.io)? Also, what version of Atom did you install (if atom --version works you can check with that command)?

Lastly, does it crash if you start in safe mode (atom --safe)?

I think I tried several ways including using the Ubuntu Software Center and some kind of command typed on the terminal. I think I a site mentioned using the debian version. I did not do that as I use Ubuntu not Debian. What is the proper way to do it?

Ubuntu is Debian based so you can install the .deb on Ubuntu.

The official methods of installation are documented here:

http://flight-manual.atom.io/getting-started/sections/installing-atom

So one way is to download the .deb file from https://atom.io and then install it from the command line:

sudo dpkg -i atom-amd64.deb
