Atom changes filename if same file edited with vim

Im running atom on windows 10. Im finding atom creating an alternative filename for the currently edited file if I also edit it in vim 8.1

  • open test.txt in atom - dont make any changes
  • open test.txt in vim - make a change and save
  • return to atom to find filename has changed to “test.txz~”

The behavior does not occur if I use notepad instead of vim. It does occur if use nvim.

I have disabled all optional packages.

I would like to understand what is going on!

That should explain that this is entirely unrelated to Atom.

myfile.txt~ is a backup file — the version of myfile.txt before your edited it.

I now have set nowritebackup in my vimrc and all is fine.
