Atom can not list or install packages

#1

On a fresh build from github, I generated a debian package, and installed atom.

I can successfully launch and edit files, however, the network seems unreachable .

and the trace on the gui says thus:

npm.config.get('https-proxy')
|| npm.config.get('proxy')
 || process.env.HTTPS_PROXY
 || process.env.HTTP_PROXY;

TypeError: Cannot read property 'get' of undefined

Does Atom need node and npm installed on the machine it is installed on?
I built atom on a different host with node, for amd-64 architectures and

installed the same on ubuntu
