ATOM as git text editor - Waiting for your editor to close the file

I have set up ATOM as my git text editor, when I try to commit, rebase etc. ATOM opens a new tab to make my changes there. Saving and closing the new tab does not resolve the hint message from git - “Waiting for your editor to close the file.” . The only way to get my git bash to be “unlocked” is to close my ATOM entirely.
Is there a way to set ATOM or Git in a way that saving and closing only the new tab to “unlock” my git bash, either by an ATOM package or ATOM/Git settings ?

This works for me, at least on macOS:

git config --global core.editor "atom --wait"
