Atom 1.24.0 Stability Issues on Ubuntu 16.04

#1

I’ve been using Atom every day for a few years now and I love it.

Last week I upgraded to version 1.24.0 and now the editor is freezing several times an hour.

I do have a lot of stuff installed:

Anyone else experiencing stability issues on Ubuntu?

#2

I decided to give atom-beta a spin.

sudo apt install atom-beta

I’m now running version 1.25.0-beta0.

So far so good - I wonder if this updated version of Electron is more stable?

#3

Did stability problems occur when running Atom 1.24.0 in safe mode?

I don’t know how you’d test it, maybe leave it running in the background and check in on it every so often. It’s good to know the beta works at least.

#4

How did you install 1.24.0? Your comment mentions using apt to get the beta version, but my most recent understanding was that the developers didn’t have the resources to support official Linux repository releases and all of the ones out in the wild were community-run. It may be worth downloading the same version from the GitHub releases and seeing if there’s a difference in performance. I don’t think that’s super-likely, but it’s a variable on the table that’s easy to test if the freezes are as reliable as you say.

#5

There has been an official apt repo for a couple of months now.

See here for details.

#6

Pleased to report that after almost a full day of work I’ve seen no more crashes or freezes.

This beta version feels solid and stable.

#7

Twelve days later and still running smoothly.

Atom rules!
